Lisbon Energy Summit & Exhibition 2023
Leading European energy transition event will return to Lisbon next year
- Energy transition was in focus during the 3-day conference and exhibition
- 3,000+ energy leaders, investors and executives joined to discuss the future of the sector
- Next year the Summit will return to Lisbon on 27-29 May 2024 to continue the conversation around net zero ambitions
The Lisbon Energy Summit & Exhibition 2023 received acclaim for its role in mobilising the sector to talk about balancing energy security against net-zero targets, enabling investment to secure a low carbon economy, and the decarbonisation of hard to abate sectors. The conference demonstrated the perfect opportunity to raise crucial topics amongst relevant stakeholders, gathering for the first time in Portugal.
Opening the event, H.E. Duarte Cordeiro, Minister for Environment & Climate Action, Portuguese Republic, who officially endorsed the event from its conception, took the opportunity to commit to policies and regulation that will attract foreign investment.
The Portuguese Government is already simplifying the processes to make the licensing easier to accelerate the energetic transition in a stable scenario for the investors.
H.E. João Galamba, Minister for Infrastructure, Portuguese Republic, followed saying;
“Taking into account Portugal's potential in terms of renewable energies, the ambition is to place the country in the "pole position" for the production of sustainable aviation fuels" (SAF).
Ana Fontoura Gouveia, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate assured that;
"The review of the strategy for hydrogen will have a higher target,” and admitted that “the winners of the first offshore wind auction in Portugal may only be known in 2024."
140+ speakers and leaders including Maria da Graça Carvalho, Member, European Parliament, Filipe Silva (Galp), Miguel Stilwell d'Andrade (EDP), João Manso Neto (Greenvolt Group), Sébastien Clerc (VoItalia), Cornelius Matthes (Dii Desert Energy) and Christian Pho Duc (Smartenergy), joined to discuss the opportunities and risks that the energy sector is currently facing.
Filipe Silva, the CEO of Galp, discussed the European energy transition outlook in a session addressing the energy trilemma - Security, Affordability & Decarbonisation saying;
"Europe operates in a global world, this is a global problem, that there is only one atmosphere and we have to make sure that we comply with the same rules”, pointing out that the rules and prohibitions that are foreseen are at risk of "killing" Europe's industrial capacity, which will migrate to other parts of the world, such as China or India, where it will be cheaper to produce.
Among the guest speakers, António Vidigal, Energy and ITC Advisor, who headed EDP Inovação for years, stressed that he sees Portugal as “a living laboratory for the energy transition” and listed some examples of innovation made in Portugal, such as the Windfloat Atlantic wind farm, some pioneering models of ultra-fast charging for electric vehicles, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) solutions from Magnum Cap, batteries from Addvolt and efficient lighting from Arquiled.
Taking place at FIL in Parque das Nações the Lisbon Energy Summit & Exhibition 2023 brought together industry stakeholders, from energy producers to decision-makers, regulators, technology companies, investors, big energy consumers, and diverse organisations, all having in common one central concern, the decarbonisation of the economy.
Simon Marshall, Event Director, has a clear vision for the Lisbon Energy Summit & Exhibition 2024 and discusses how industry changemakers will need to be present next May;
“Transformative areas of the clean energy roadmap that will define the Lisbon Energy Summit & Exhibition in the run-up to 2024 include Portugal’s upcoming wind auction, the ramping up of floating and conventional solar plus regional Iberian and E.U. collaboration across integrated energy systems, green molecules and decarbonisation. There is much innovation to be showcased and tangible business to be won!”
